About passwords in Yoroi
Every time you make a transaction with your Yoroi Wallet Extension (desktop) and Yoroi Mobile, you will be prompted to enter a specific user-generated password to confirm or authorize it. In Yoroi, this is called your password.
What is a Password?
Your Yoroi password is an additional layer of security designed to protect your Cardano ADA and other supported assets. This password is created during the initial setup of your Yoroi wallet and is required to authorize transactions and certain wallet actions.
If you forget or lose your password, it can be reset using your recovery phrase, provided you still have access to it.
Important: Your funds are not stored in the app itself. Your ADA remains safe because only you have access to your wallet’s private keys, which are derived from your recovery phrase.
Tips for Creating a Strong Password
Your password is used to encrypt your private key. If your wallet data were to fall into the hands of a malicious third party, they could attempt to discover your private key using a brute-force attack.
For this reason, it’s important to use a strong, unique password.
- Use **at least 12–16 characters **(the minimum requirement from Yoroi is 10 characters)
- Combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters
- Avoid:
- Common words or phrases
- Personal information (names, birthdays, locations)
- Reused passwords from other accounts
- Encrypting your password and recovery phrase adds an extra layer of protection to your funds.
For example, you can store your password or recovery phrase in an encrypted password manager vault and keep secure backups of that encrypted file on multiple offline or external storage devices. This helps reduce the risk of loss or unauthorized access.
If You Forget the Password
- Your wallet password cannot be recovered. But you have an unlimited number of tries to remember it.
- You can reset your password by restoring your wallet using your recovery phrase.
- Without the recovery phrase, access to the wallet and funds is permanently lost.
Keep Your Wallet Secure
- Never share your password or recovery phrase with anyone.
- Do not type or store your password or recovery phrase in:Email inboxesCloud storage servicesScreenshots or online notes
- Your recovery phrase acts as a backup for your wallet. Anyone with access to it can control your funds.
